Short and sweet this week — but genuinely useful. If Google Translate is your go-to for French, it’s time to switch. We prefer DeepL, and once you try it side by side, the difference is hard to ignore.

Why DeepL translates better
Google Translate tends to go word-for-word, which produces technically correct output that often sounds robotic or just slightly off. DeepL handles context better. When translating English into French, the result reads more naturally — like something a person would actually say, not something assembled by a machine.
The difference really shows up when you’re reading French. Where Google will often give you a literal translation of a colloquialism or saying — one that means nothing outside its original context — DeepL more consistently finds the right equivalent in English. And when a French word carries multiple meanings, DeepL uses the full sentence to choose the correct one rather than defaulting to the most common definition.
Free version vs. paid
We use the free version and it covers almost everything we need. If you upgrade to the paid tier, you unlock formal and informal register settings — a genuinely useful feature when you’re writing to a landlord versus texting a friend. But the free version alone is already a significant upgrade over Google Translate.
