Have you ever caught a story about France in the American press and wished you could hear the French perspective on it? Or maybe you’re already living in France, mentally exhausted by newspaper articles en français, but still want to stay informed?
Here are our go-to sources for French news, straight from French outlets — in English.
Le Monde English
We just discovered this one recently and honestly, we love it. The range of topics is genuinely impressive. All the serious sections are there — Economy, French Politics, Environment, International Issues — and there’s even a “United States” section if you want to read American news through French eyes.
But what really sets it apart are the sections for French Delights, Food, Lifestyle, Culture, and Summer Reads. That balance says something, and it ties directly into what we talk about in this week’s video: yes, there’s serious stuff to address in the world, but there’s also life to be enjoyed. Can you even imagine a major American newspaper running a section called “American Delights”?
The Connexion
For news specific to life in France as a foreigner, this is the best source out there. It launched over 20 years ago with British expats in mind, so you’ll notice plenty of UK references throughout — but as more Americans make the move to France, the coverage is starting to reflect that shift too. Either way, if you’re living in France, this is the place to stay on top of changes that affect expats on the ground.
France 24 English
Available both as a website and a very active YouTube channel. Clean, straightforward, and easy to follow.
Sud Ouest (En Français)
This one’s the local paper for our area of France, and we genuinely love it — even though it’s in French. Raina reads through what she can, then uses her browser or phone to translate anything uncertain. For local-level news, events, and community issues, nothing else comes close.
A Note on Paid Subscriptions
All but one of these require a paid subscription. We know that’s not always a popular stance, but here’s our honest take: 100% ad-supported journalism is a big reason clickbait exists in the first place. We’re selective about what we pay for, but we don’t mind supporting the publications that actually enrich our lives.
