This week we saved €650 on three train tickets to Paris. Here’s exactly how we did it.
The Sticker Shock
We were booking a round trip from Bordeaux to Paris for a holiday weekend in May — still several months out, just over two hours each way, multiple trains running daily. We expected reasonable prices.
Then the total appeared: €320 per person. Nearly €1,000 for our family of three.
French trains use dynamic pricing, so fares climb as seats fill up. But with this much lead time on a busy route, that number caught us completely off guard.
The Fix: SNCF Discount Cards
That’s when I remembered something from our first year in France — before we even left the US, we had purchased SNCF discount cards.
These cards offer serious savings, with different options depending on how often you travel, whether you tend to travel on weekends or weekdays, and which routes you use most. The card Raina holds gives her 30–50% off her own ticket, plus 30% off a companion’s ticket when the trip includes at least one weekend day. It also comes with flexible change options and caps the maximum fare on certain routes.
The cost? €49 per year.
How to Choose the Right Card
SNCF offers several card options, so the best one depends on your travel habits. You can find and compare all of them on the SNCF website — scroll down to the “compare cards” button, which makes it easy to see which one fits your situation.
A few things worth knowing before you buy:
- Cards are valid for one year from the start date you choose
- You can set that start date up to five months in advance — so you can time it to when you’ll actually start traveling, rather than letting it sit unused
- Once purchased, you add it to your SNCF account through the app by selecting the option to “dematerialize” it (essentially converting it to an e-card)
- After that, discounted fares appear automatically every time you search for tickets
The Result
I searched again with the card applied. The price dropped to €108 per person, round trip — including first class on the way there. Our family total went from nearly €1,000 down to €324.
In the US, discount cards tend to feel like gimmicks — a birthday freebie here, a wall of exclusions there. SNCF discount cards are the real deal! Totally worth it.
Save the difference for wine. 😂
